Kwaneta Harris is a contributing writer for The Marshall Project and a Senior Writer and Editor for Solitary Watch where she documents her experiences incarcerated in the largest state prison in Texas, including almost nine years in solitary confinement. Her writings have appeared in Cosmopolitan, Rolling Stone, and Teen Vogue, among others, and she writes on Substack at Write or Die. She authored a segment on This American Life and was interviewed for a documentary by Al Jazeera about solitary confinement. In 2025, she co-authored the book Ending Isolation: The Case Against Solitary Confinement, and she is working on “Finding Oneself in Solitude,” a practical guide to mindfulness, meditation, and yoga for people living in solitary confinement, and another book about the teenagers from juvenile who were her neighbors in adult solitary confinement.
In 2025, Harris was recognized by the Society of Professional Journalists and Prison Journalism Project as the Prison Journalist of the Year and she also won the 2024 Edward R. Murrow Award. She is a 2026-2028 Galaxy Changemaker Fellow, a 2025-2026 Movements Against Mass Incarceration Social Change Fellow, and a 2024-2025 Haymarket Writing Freedom Fellow.
